Thanksgiving Travel: Creating Memorable Getaways with Loved Ones

Updated: Oct 31, 2023

So our Thanksgiving has changed over the years. The kids are older, everyone is busy with their own families, and Thanksgiving, just isn't 'giving' any more. So we've decided to shake things up and next, year we're taking a FAMILY TRIP!

We have to get back to the basics. Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, reflection, and togetherness. It's a moment to appreciate what makes our family special and count our blessings. This is a time to create memories and what better way, than celebrating with a memorable getaway with our family young & old?

Our new Tradition: Thanksgiving Family Getaway

Thanksgiving travel is a growing trend, and for a good reason. More and more people are choosing to break away from the traditional Thanksgiving feast at home and opt for a change of scenery. It's a chance to explore new places, cultures, and experiences while cherishing quality time with loved ones. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or just beginning your journey, Thanksgiving can be the perfect occasion for a getaway.

The Benefits of a Thanksgiving Getaway Include:

  1. Quality Time: The hustle and bustle of everyday life often leave little room for quality time with family and friends. Thanksgiving travel allows you to escape, unplug and getaway from the routine to connect with loved ones on a deeper level.

  2. New Traditions: While traditional Thanksgiving dinners are wonderful, creating new traditions in different settings can be equally rewarding. Imagine celebrating Thanksgiving on a beach, in a charming European village, or amidst the serene beauty of a national park.

  3. Reduced Stress: Preparing a Thanksgiving feast can be a demanding task. In September, we had to start planning who was making this year's "Potato Salad" because last year Brenda's was blah! By opting for Thanksgiving travel, you can reduce the stress of making that list, fighting over who makes the best green been casserole, and then having to clean up all of the mess. Instead, consider savoring delicious local cuisine or a having a personally catered holiday meal that you don't have to start a week in advance!

  4. Expanding Horizons: Traveling during Thanksgiving exposes you to new cultures and traditions. You can learn about the significance of this holiday in different parts of the world, broadening your cultural knowledge.

Okay, all of this is great, but how do you choose the perfect destination for your family?

This is crucial! You have to take into account the age range of your family. Big Ma may not want to go tubing down the slopes, but if there is an option for her to relax in the resort with a great cup of cider with great entertainment, this could work. If there are small children who will be traveling keep in mind the needs of the little ones as well as their parents who may need options for baby sitters for evening events. Some of my favorite options:

  1. Charleston, South Carolina: Known for its Southern hospitality, Charleston is a charming city that embraces the essence of Thanksgiving. Enjoy a historic Thanksgiving meal and explore the city's rich culture.

  2. New York City, New York: If you've always wanted to witness the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade or skate at Rockefeller Center, the Big Apple is the place to be. The city's festive atmosphere is unmatched.

  3. Sedona, Arizona: For a tranquil Thanksgiving surrounded by stunning red rock landscapes, Sedona is the perfect choice. It's an excellent destination for those seeking a peaceful and nature-inspired holiday.

  4. Paris, France: Experience Thanksgiving in the City of Light. Savor exquisite French cuisine and explore iconic landmarks. Paris offers a unique blend of tradition and elegance.

  5. Asheville, North Carolina: If you prefer a mountain getaway, Asheville provides the perfect backdrop. Embrace the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and enjoy a cozy Thanksgiving retreat.

To make the most of your Thanksgiving travel, you'll need to keep in mind to:

  1. Plan in Advance: Thanksgiving is a popular time for travel, so it's essential to plan ahead. Book accommodations and flights early to secure the best options.

  2. Pack Smart: Since you'll be on the move during the holiday, pack accordingly. Make sure you have all the essentials: the perfect luggage, airplane essentials, road trip entertainment; or packing tools, for a comfortable and enjoyable trip.

  3. Local Experiences: Immerse yourself in local traditions. Attend Thanksgiving parades, explore local markets, and participate in holiday events.

  4. Capture the Moments: Document your Thanksgiving journey with photos and journaling. These memories will be cherished for years to come.

  5. Enjoy the Feast: Whether you're dining at a restaurant or indulging in a traditional Thanksgiving meal, savor every bite. It's an opportunity to try local flavors and create lasting culinary memories.

Happy Travels!
